Carlo Mortara is the great-grand nephew of Edgardo Mortara, the Jewish
boy kidnapped by the Inquisition in 1858 and whose story is told in the
fourth episode of the series Secret Files of the Inquisition. He represents
the Mortara family which continues to campaign for an apology from the Vatican
for Edgardo's abduction and against the canonization of Pius IX in 2000
by Pope John Paul II. |

Carlo Mortara states: “We suffered when we saw the beatification
of somebody who made us suffer. And we felt it was quite inappropriate in
the case of Pius IX. I don’t understand that a child can be taken
away unwillingly from his family who are contrary to it.” |
